Sony AI has introduced the Fair Human-Centric Image Benchmark a groundbreaking, consent-based, and globally diverse dataset designed to evaluate fairness in computer vision models. Published in Nature, FHIBE addresses long-standing industry issues with biased and non-consensually collected datasets. It provides a new global standard for responsible data collection and ethical AI development, enabling researchers to assess and mitigate bias across various computer vision tasks such as face detection, pose estimation, and visual question answering.
The dataset includes 10,318 images from 1,981 individuals across 81 countries, each carefully annotated with demographic, environmental, and technical attributes to allow nuanced bias analysis. FHIBE has already confirmed known biases and uncovered new ones, such as disparities linked to hairstyle diversity or stereotype reinforcement in generative models. Importantly, participants retain control over their data, with the right to withdraw consent without loss of compensation.
By demonstrating that fair, transparent, and accountable AI data collection is achievable, Sony AI sets a new industry benchmark for ethical AI research. FHIBE reflects Sony’s commitment to fostering trustworthy AI that protects and represents global diversity while driving innovation responsibly.
