Apple has announced a major update to Apple Podcasts that will introduce advanced HLS video podcast support this spring.
The new experience uses HTTP Live Streaming technology to enable seamless switching between watching and listening within the app. Users can watch in full screen, download episodes for offline viewing and benefit from automatic quality adjustment across WiFi and cellular networks.
Creators will be able to distribute HLS video podcasts through supported hosting providers while retaining control over content and monetisation. Participating partners at launch include Acast, ART19, SiriusXM and Triton Digital. For the first time, creators can dynamically insert video ads including host read placements.
Apple will not charge creators or hosting providers for distribution, though impression based fees for dynamic ads will apply later this year.
HLS video is currently available for testing in beta versions of iOS, iPadOS and visionOS, with full rollout planned this spring.
