Google Cloud has entered a new agreement with the UK government to help update and improve key public services like the NHS and local council systems. The focus is on replacing outdated technology with more modern, efficient tools that can improve services and reduce costs.
A large part of this partnership involves moving away from legacy systems, which still power over a quarter of public sector technology. In some areas, such as police forces and NHS trusts, that figure is as high as 70%. These systems are often locked into expensive contracts and run on old servers that are more vulnerable to failures and cyberattacks.
Through this collaboration, Google Cloud will help departments switch to more flexible and secure cloud-based systems. The aim is to make it easier for people to access services like healthcare, tax returns and local council support without delays or confusion.
Google DeepMind will also work with government experts to explore how emerging technologies can improve scientific research and service delivery. In addition, a training programme will be launched to help tens of thousands of public sector workers gain skills in AI and digital tools by 2030.
The partnership is expected to be officially announced at the Google Cloud Summit in London.
