New Venture Focuses on Sustainable Infrastructure and Local Production in Africa

Honda Motor has announced the establishment of PathAhead, a startup originating from its IGNITION new business creation program, focused on developing sustainable road construction materials.

PathAhead has developed Rising Sand, an artificial aggregate made from desert sand designed for use in road paving and construction. The material is engineered to improve durability and consistency compared to conventional aggregates, while using locally available resources.

The company plans to begin demonstration testing in Kenya from 2027, followed by Tanzania and South Africa, to validate performance under different climate and traffic conditions. Based on these results, PathAhead aims to begin mass production at a facility in Kenya by 2028, with a focus on building a local supply ecosystem across Africa.

Rising Sand is expected to extend road lifespan and reduce maintenance frequency, while also addressing challenges related to variability and depletion of natural aggregates.
