Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, has launched a new messaging app called Bitchat. It’s currently in the testing phase and offers a different approach to online communication. Unlike most messaging apps that depend on the internet or mobile networks, Bitchat uses Bluetooth to send messages directly between nearby devices.
This means users don’t need a phone number, email address or even an internet connection to use it. Messages travel from one device to another in a chain, creating a type of mesh network. It can be especially useful in places with no internet access.
The app also focuses on privacy. All messages are encrypted from end to end, so only the sender and receiver can read them. Messages are deleted once they are delivered. Group chats can be joined using hashtags and can also be protected with passwords. If someone is offline, Bitchat can store the message and send it later.
