LG Chem and Enilive have begun construction of Korea’s first plant for hydrotreated vegetable oil and sustainable aviation fuel. The facility is being built in Seosan, about 80 km from Seoul, within LG Chem’s Daesan Chemical Complex. Operated by their joint venture LG-Eni BioRefining, the plant is set to begin operations in 2027 and will process around 400,000 tons of renewable bio-feedstocks each year.
The plant will use Ecofining technology, developed by Eni and Honeywell UOP, to produce fuels from used cooking oil and other bio-waste. These fuels aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels. The demand for such renewable fuels is expected to grow due to stricter fuel regulations globally.
This project is part of LG Chem’s broader efforts to shift toward lower-carbon operations. The company plans to use HVO to reduce emissions across its supply chain and increase its offering of certified bio-based materials. These will be used in products like ABS for electronics and cars, EVA for sports gear and SAP for hygiene items. Enilive sees this as part of its push to expand global biofuel production capacity by 2030.
