LG Energy Solution has announced a strategic partnership with U.S.-based South 8 Technologies to co-develop lithium-ion batteries designed for use in extreme low-temperature environments, including space. The collaboration aims to create space-rated batteries capable of operating at temperatures as low as -60°C, marking LG Energy Solution’s entry into the aerospace battery sector.
The initiative is part of a broader effort involving KULR Technology Group and NASA to develop advanced cold-temperature battery systems for future deep space missions. LG Energy Solution will contribute to battery cell design, testing, and evaluation, while South 8 Technologies will produce enhanced cells using its patented liquefied gas (LiGas®) electrolyte. These batteries will be integrated into KULR’s One Space platform to support demanding space applications.
South 8 Technologies’ liquefied gas electrolyte enables stable operation in ultra-low temperatures and improves safety by reducing thermal risks under stress conditions. The partnership builds on an ongoing collaboration that began through LG Energy Solution’s Startup Challenge Program in 2019 and a joint development agreement signed in 2024, strengthening both companies’ commitment to advancing reliable energy storage for aerospace environments.
