LG Electronics has signed a patent license agreement with Amazon that allows Amazon to use LG’s Wi-Fi Standard Essential Patents in devices that rely on Wi-Fi. This includes Echo smart speakers, Fire TV streaming devices and Fire Tablets.
Standard Essential Patents are technologies that must be used when implementing global technical standards. Once a technology becomes a standard, companies across the world depend on these patents to build compliant products. LG holds a large patent portfolio across mobile communications, Wi-Fi, broadcasting and codecs, with 97,880 registered patents worldwide as of the first half of 2025. About half are related to standards.
LG says the agreement highlights its leadership in Wi-Fi technologies. The company is also in discussions with other global firms that use Wi-Fi standards. LG plans to expand its patent leadership in areas such as 6G, V2X communications, AI and quantum computing. Its vehicle solutions unit has also gained recognition for AR navigation technology.
LG has included patent licensing in its corporate charter since 2022, framing intellectual property as a core pillar of future value creation.
