Microsoft in partnership with IDC has introduced a new AI maturity model designed to help manufacturers improve operations using data and artificial intelligence. As global supply chains remain uncertain and customers demand faster, more personalized products, many manufacturers are struggling to keep up with outdated systems, fragmented data and workforce skill gaps.

The new framework called The Maturity Path for Manufacturers to Embrace AI Enabled Operations offers a structured approach to tackle these issues. It outlines progress across three areas data, technology and people helping businesses assess where they stand and what steps to take next.

Microsoft highlights Frontier Firms as examples of those leading in AI adoption. These companies are redesigning workflows by combining human expertise with AI tools. They run on clean, connected data, automate key processes like predictive maintenance and empower workers to make better decisions.

Real-world cases include Sandvik using AI for product design, Textron Aviation improving aircraft maintenance and Husqvarna bringing generative AI onto the factory floor. Microsoft’s work with Siemens and Sight Machine also supports manufacturers with scalable AI systems.
