Microsoft has announced the expanded rollout of its Scareware blocker in Microsoft Edge, now enabled by default on most Windows and Mac devices. This AI-powered feature detects and blocks full-screen scams like fake virus alerts or law enforcement impersonations—before traditional threat intelligence systems can respond. Using a local computer vision model, Scareware blocker shields users without slowing browsing and can be configured by IT administrators for enterprise environments.
During preview testing, each user report via Scareware blocker helped protect an average of 50 additional users, working in coordination with Microsoft Defender SmartScreen to block threats globally. To enhance response times, Edge version 142 introduces a new Scareware sensor, which immediately alerts SmartScreen about suspicious pages, reducing the window of exposure for fast-moving scams.
Microsoft is also improving the SmartScreen protection pipeline to ensure faster blocking and better scalability across its global network. These advancements strengthen Edge’s position as a leader in proactive browser security, providing layered, real-time protection against evolving scam tactics. Microsoft continues to encourage community feedback to refine its threat detection and make the web safer for all users.
