Mitsubishi Electric has signed a collaboration agreement with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation’s Jhunan Brewery to test carbon capture and utilization in beer production. The project will capture CO2 from the brewery’s gas boiler emissions, purify it, and reuse it in the brewing process, contributing to carbon recycling efforts.
This initiative builds on an earlier agreement between Mitsubishi Electric and ITRI in 2024 to research sustainability technologies. In June 2025, Mitsubishi Electric installed an ITRI-developed CO2 capture machine at its R&D Center in Hyogo, Japan, where it began testing CO2 capture from flue gas. The new collaboration extends these trials to an operational brewery, allowing real world testing of CCU applications.
The partners will explore both the technical challenges and the economic feasibility of capturing and reusing CO2 in beverage manufacturing.
