Mitsubishi Corporation through its subsidiary Cermaq Group AS, will acquire three salmon farming businesses from Grieg Seafood ASA. The acquisition includes operations in Northern Norway and on both coasts of Canada.

The move supports Mitsubishi’s goal to strengthen sustainable aquaculture amid rising global food demand. Farmed salmon is seen as a low-impact source of protein with growing market potential. Cermaq, which became Mitsubishi’s subsidiary in 2014, already produces 200,000 tons of salmon annually across Norway, Chile and Canada.

With this acquisition Cermaq’s production is expected to reach about 280,000 tons by 2027 a 40% increase from 2024. The deal will help Cermaq integrate new operations using its aquaculture expertise, while Mitsubishi aims to boost global seafood supply through a stable and sustainable model.
