Motorola Solutions has completed the acquisition of Silvus Technologies, a company based in Los Angeles that develops mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET). These networks are used in tough and remote areas where fixed infrastructure is not available. Silvus’ technology helps connect people and devices through secure voice, video and data communication, even when users are constantly moving.
The networks are self-healing and can grow as more devices join, making them useful for defense, public safety and autonomous systems like drones and robots. Silvus’ solutions are already in use by defense groups, law enforcement, and businesses worldwide.
With this acquisition, Motorola aims to strengthen its presence in the market for drones and unmanned systems. The company believes Silvus’ solutions will work well with its existing communication technologies and plans to make them available to more customers globally.
The deal includes an upfront payment of $4.38 billion in cash and $20 million in restricted stock for some employees. Additional payments of up to $600 million may be made if certain business goals are met by 2027 and 2028. The acquisition is also expected to help Motorola enter a larger and growing market related to mobile and unmanned systems.
