Nokia has been chosen by INX-ZA, the Internet Exchange Point division of the Internet Service Provider Association (ISPA) to modernize its internet exchange network in South Africa. The upgrade will introduce 400GE-ready and expanded 100GE services, offering higher capacity and improved reliability for businesses and internet users.
Internet exchanges reduce reliance on costly international bandwidth by enabling local data exchange. Many exchanges in Africa still operate on older systems with limited scalability, but INX-ZA’s adoption of Nokia’s high-performance IP routing portfolio addresses these challenges. The new infrastructure is designed to be energy-efficient, scalable and capable of supporting future digital growth.
The rollout will begin in Johannesburg, home to JINX, Africa’s oldest internet exchange, which has operated with 100% uptime since 1996. Nokia and INX-ZA plan to expand JINX from seven to ten data centers by year-end, supported by thirty new high-capacity platforms. Similar upgrades are planned for exchanges in Cape Town and Durban.
