Nokia has been selected by Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) to deploy a private 5G wireless network to support the utility’s long-term grid modernization plans. MLGW, the largest three-service municipal utility in the US, serves over 420,000 customers across Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee.
The private 5G network will provide a secure and scalable communication system designed to support critical applications across MLGW’s electric, gas and water services. The system aims to improve power distribution, reduce outages and speed up service restoration during disruptions.
Nokia’s solution will support real-time communication and automation for various operations, such as automated meter reading, grid monitoring, fault detection and remote management. It will also allow the utility to integrate new technologies like smart meters, grid sensors and other IoT-enabled systems with existing infrastructure.
The deployment includes Nokia’s AirScale radio access, 5G Core Enterprise Solution, microwave backhaul and managed services. Security will be reinforced through Nokia’s NetGuard suite, which includes tools for threat detection and access management.
