OpenAI has introduced a new feature called the ChatGPT agent designed to act as a helpful assistant that can not only hold conversations but also complete tasks on your behalf. It brings together multiple tools into one system, allowing it to research online, interact with web pages, use apps like Gmail and GitHub, and even write and run code when needed. It can plan events, analyze information, create editable documents and more all from within the ChatGPT interface.
The agent works using a virtual computer and combines three key systems: a browser that can visually interact with web pages (clicking buttons, filling forms) a research tool that gathers and summarizes information and ChatGPT’s natural language capabilities. This setup allows the assistant to handle complex workflows while keeping the user informed and in control.
A strong focus has been placed on safety. The agent always asks before performing sensitive actions like sending messages or completing forms. It includes a watch mode for high-risk steps, restricts certain websites and file types and does not store memory during its initial rollout. It’s also built to detect and avoid manipulated content online, using internal safeguards and evaluation tools.
Currently the ChatGPT agent is available to Pro, Plus, and Team users in supported regions, with plans to expand to Enterprise, Education, and European users in the near future.
