A new international standard for battery free wireless sensing has been approved and published as ISO IEC 18000 65 in February 2026. The initiative was led by Keio University together with Panasonic Holdings, DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED and RAMXEED LIMITED.
Panasonic Holdings and its partners developed wireless communication parameters that enable continuous sensor data streaming using 920 MHz UHF RFID. The new standard builds on ISO IEC 18000 63 and introduces frequency channel assignment for each tag, along with procedures for starting and stopping continuous data acquisition.
The system uses backscatter communication with power consumption of around 10 µW, allowing integration of commercial sensors and ADCs into battery free wireless networks. It supports real time monitoring of vibration, strain and temperature, helping enable predictive maintenance in industrial machinery and infrastructure.
By standardizing interoperability across manufacturers, the new framework reduces vendor lock in and supports wider deployment of Ambient IoT systems.
