Panasonic Automotive Systems has joined the Open Invention Network, a global organization that protects open-source software through a shared patent cross-licensing framework. OIN has more than 4,000 members that agree not to assert patent rights over core Linux and related open-source technologies. By joining, Panasonic Automotive Systems supports a system that allows companies to use and contribute to Linux without patent concerns.
The company has long worked with open-source communities, including Automotive Grade Linux, and has helped advance technologies needed for Software Defined Vehicles. Its work includes leading standardization of VirtIO, an important virtualization technology for automotive software. Panasonic says OIN membership will help strengthen the development of Linux and other open-source tools while supporting faster progress in advanced in-vehicle software.
OIN’s leadership noted that open-source plays an important role in modern automotive innovation as vehicles become more connected and software driven. Panasonic’s participation signals its commitment to patent non-aggression in the Linux ecosystem and its intent to support safer, more secure technological development for the SDV era.
