The Philips-led IWISH (Intelligent Workflow Optimization and Intuitive System Interaction in Healthcare) project has received the prestigious ITEA Award of Excellence for Business Impact for its contributions to improving hospital operating room efficiency.
Over three years, the IWISH consortium developed AI-driven tools including real-time gaze tracking, machine learning models, and synthetic data generation to optimize OR workflows. The project demonstrated:
36% improvement in procedures finishing on time
Significant gains in algorithm accuracy for phase and activity recognition
AI-based scheduling and dynamic rescheduling capabilities across gynecology, cardiac catheterization, gallbladder surgery, and resource allocation
By reducing inefficiencies that cost European hospitals an estimated €9 billion annually, the IWISH project marks a major step toward smarter, AI-powered operating rooms.
