Siemens Demonstrates Cloud-Based Signaling X in Live Metro Operation

Siemens Mobility has conducted the first live metro demonstration of its Signaling X solution at the Singapore Rail Test Center, marking a new phase in digital rail operations. The system brings Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) into a centralized, cloud-ready infrastructure — the Signaling Data Center — where proven CBTC and interlocking software run on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) IT hardware using Siemens’ Distributed Smart Safe System (DS3) platform.

Signaling X enables up to 20% higher operational efficiency and 30% energy savings by allowing trains to run safely at shorter intervals. The solution integrates interlocking, signaling, and control functions through open interfaces on standard hardware, simplifying operations and improving scalability. It also creates a cyber-secure environment and makes operational data available for future AI applications.

Following its initial use in mainline rail after its 2024 launch, Signaling X is now being introduced for urban networks. This development represents a step toward more flexible and sustainable mobility solutions, with the potential to optimize traffic management and reduce system complexity for metro operators worldwide.
