Siemens Mobility has secured a contract from EFE Trenes de Chile to implement the country’s first European Train Control System Level 2 (ETCS L2) across two major rail corridors: Alameda–Melipilla and Santiago–Batuco, covering 87 kilometers. The project introduces Siemens Mobility’s Signaling X technology to Latin America for the first time. Built on the DS3 platform designed for SIL4 applications, Signaling X centralizes interlockings, signaling, and control functions into a virtualized data center, allowing rail software to operate on commercial off-the-shelf hardware. This approach aims to streamline infrastructure, lower complexity, and support future digital upgrades.
The contract includes engineering, supply, installation, commissioning, and a ten-year service agreement covering digital services, asset management, and preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance. The system will integrate ETCS L2 wayside equipment, advanced interlockings, traffic control centers, and onboard systems for 32 trains. Communication will rely on LTE technology with readiness for future 5G deployment.
Siemens Mobility will also create a regional software maintenance Center of Competence to support long-term operations and additional projects in the region. This initiative aligns with EFE’s broader strategy to standardize ETCS L2 for future expansions and contributes to ongoing rail modernization efforts across Latin America, where Siemens Mobility continues to support digitalization and operational efficiency.
