At TransMEA 2025 in Cairo, Siemens Mobility unveiled the Velaro high-speed train to the Egyptian public for the first time, marking a key step in Egypt’s rail modernization program. The event was attended by Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir, Siemens AG President and CEO Roland Busch, and Siemens Mobility CEO Michael Peter. On the same day, the Desiro HC regional train completed its first test run on new tracks near Cairo’s 6th of October Depot.

Both developments are part of Egypt’s plan to build a 2,000 km high-speed rail network connecting Cairo, Alexandria, Marsa Matrouh, and Ain Sokhna—set to become one of the largest globally. The Velaro high-speed train, designed to operate in desert conditions, reaches speeds of up to 250 km/h and accommodates 489 passengers. The Desiro HC regional trains, capable of 160 km/h, provide 849 passenger spaces and accessibility features.

Developed in partnership with Arab Contractors and Orascom Construction, the network aims to enhance mobility, reduce emissions, and promote regional connectivity. Siemens Mobility will maintain the network for 15 years, covering 41 Velaro high-speed trains, 94 Desiro HC trains, and 41 Vectron locomotives, ensuring efficient and sustainable operation across Egypt.
