Sony has launched the RX1R III, a compact camera with a full-frame sensor and a fixed 35mm lens. The new model keeps the same lens as its previous versions but now uses a 61-megapixel sensor, similar to what’s found in Sony’s other high-resolution cameras. It’s paired with an updated image processor, which helps with better autofocus and image quality.
The RX1R III now includes phase-detection autofocus and a dedicated chip for AI-based subject tracking. This helps the camera recognize and follow people, animals, and vehicles more accurately. For video, it can record in 4K at 30 frames per second and Full HD up to 120 fps. It also offers basic video tools like color profiles and some creative filters.
Although the lens cannot be changed, the camera has a feature called Step Crop Shooting, which lets users digitally crop the image to simulate 50mm and 70mm fields of view. There’s also a macro mode that allows close-up shots from about 20 cm.
The RX1R III comes with a built-in electronic viewfinder and a fixed touchscreen. It doesn’t have a tilting screen, which might make certain angles harder to shoot. The battery can handle around 300 photos on a single charge and supports USB-C charging.
