WhatsApp is enhancing user security by introducing passkey-encrypted chat backups, allowing users to protect their data using their fingerprint, face, or screen lock code instead of remembering complex passwords or 64-digit encryption keys. This update builds on WhatsApp’s history of innovation in privacy, as it was the first private messaging app to offer end-to-end encryption for chat backups more than four years ago.
With passkeys, users can seamlessly enable end-to-end encryption for their backups, ensuring that their personal messages, photos, and memories remain safe, private, and accessible only to them. The new system simplifies the process while maintaining the same high security standards.
The feature is being rolled out gradually over the coming weeks and months. Users can activate it by navigating to Settings → Chats → Chat Backup → End-to-end Encrypted Backup in the WhatsApp app. By making encryption easier and more intuitive, WhatsApp reinforces its commitment to user privacy and data protection, helping millions secure their conversations with just a tap or glance, and continuing its leadership in private, secure communication.
