The Mediterranean is home to Posidonia oceanica, ancient seagrass meadows often called the lungs of the sea for their role in capturing carbon, protecting coastlines and supporting marine life. To help restore these ecosystems, LG Spain launched Smart Green Seas in partnership with the Vellmarí Association. The project planted over 15,000 seagrass shoots between Ibiza and Formentera in 2024, covering 600 square meters of seabed and surpassing its initial targets.

More than 30 local divers carried out over 500 dives to make the restoration possible. Early results show a 75 percent survival rate for the new plants, providing a strong base for growth. Led by marine biologist and National Geographic explorer Manu San Félix, the initiative has also set up an underwater nursery where seeds are germinated and replanted using low-impact methods.

The project supports global goals to restore degraded marine ecosystems by 2030 and focuses on protecting the Posidonia meadows of the Balearic Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Looking ahead, LG and Vellmarí plan to double their efforts in 2025 by planting 30,000 additional shoots and expanding local partnerships to strengthen conservation.
