Siemens Mobility and Railpool have signed a preliminary agreement to acquire a 15,000-square-meter plot within the Verona Interporto logistics hub to establish a new locomotive maintenance center. The project represents a joint investment of approximately €20 million and aims to create an open-access facility capable of servicing locomotives from multiple manufacturers. The planned hub will include five tracks for light maintenance and one track with a wheel lathe, supporting testing and upkeep of multisystem (MS) and direct current (DC) locomotives compatible with major European signaling systems.
The initiative aligns with expectations of increased rail freight activity by 2032, when the Brenner Base Tunnel is projected to expand rail capacity across the Alps. Siemens Mobility and Railpool view the Verona location as a strategic addition to existing service operations, particularly for routine inspections and adjustments that ensure locomotives remain operational.
The new center will complement Siemens Mobility’s current depot in Novara, which has supported locomotive services on the Rhine-Alpine corridor since 2015. For Railpool, the project builds on experience from its network of workshops and extensive spare parts inventory. The facility is intended to strengthen service capabilities along key European logistics routes and support evolving operational needs within the rail sector.
