Alpha Trains, a major rolling stock lessor in Europe, has ordered 15 additional Vectron Dual Mode (VDM) locomotives from Siemens Mobility. The new order, part of a framework agreement signed in 2024, also falls under the existing service contract between the two companies that covers long-term maintenance.

The locomotives will operate in Germany and Austria, adding to Alpha Trains’ existing Vectron AC, MS, and Dual Mode fleet. By combining diesel and electric power, Vectron Dual Mode locomotives offer flexibility across both electrified and non-electrified routes. They also help reduce emissions by replacing older diesel engines with modern, more efficient systems.

According to Alpha Trains, expanding the Vectron fleet supports customer demand for sustainable and flexible rail solutions. Siemens Mobility noted that the modular design of the Vectron Dual Mode allows it to adapt easily to varied infrastructure.

The new locomotives deliver 2.4 MW of power in electric mode and 2.0 MW in diesel mode, reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h. Production will take place at Siemens Mobility’s Munich-Allach plant. The expansion highlights a shared effort to improve efficiency and promote more sustainable freight transport in Europe.
