Apple has introduced support for AirPlay-based video playback in CarPlay through the iOS 26.4 beta update for iPhone. The feature was identified after the company updated its official CarPlay Developer Guide documentation.
According to the updated documentation, compatible vehicles will be able to display video content streamed from an iPhone via AirPlay on the in-car CarPlay screen. Apple clarified that video playback will only be available when the vehicle is stationary, addressing safety and regulatory considerations.
Rather than introducing standalone video applications within CarPlay, Apple appears to be enabling video streaming through AirPlay. This approach allows content to be mirrored or streamed from an iPhone directly to a compatible vehicle display.
The documentation also indicates that automakers must integrate support for CarPlay with AirPlay video within their infotainment systems. As a result, availability of the feature may depend on hardware compatibility and may not extend to all existing CarPlay-enabled vehicles.
In addition to AirPlay video support, iOS 26.4 beta reportedly expands the types of apps permitted within CarPlay. The updated guidelines reference support for “voice-based conversational apps,” alongside existing categories such as audio, communication, navigation, driving tasks, fuelling, and public safety. Apple specifies that voice-based conversational apps must prioritise voice interaction at launch and respond appropriately to user requests.
The iOS 26.4 update remains in beta and has not yet been released to the general public. Further details regarding rollout and vehicle compatibility are expected at a later stage.
