Apple has introduced hypertension notifications on Apple Watch in India, giving users a way to identify potential signs of chronic high blood pressure. Hypertension affects over a billion adults worldwide and is often undetected because it typically shows no symptoms and can be missed during routine checkups. The new feature analyses data collected by the optical heart sensor to understand how a user’s blood vessels respond to each heartbeat. Working quietly in the background, the algorithm reviews information over 30-day periods and sends a notification if it observes patterns that may indicate hypertension.
These notifications appear in the Health app on iPhone and offer additional details to help users understand why they were flagged. Apple developed the feature using machine learning models trained on data from multiple studies involving more than 100,000 participants, followed by clinical validation with over 2,000 individuals. While the feature does not detect all cases of hypertension, its reach may help many people who are unaware of potential risks.
If a user receives a notification, they are advised to monitor their blood pressure for seven days using a third-party cuff and share the readings with a healthcare provider, following current medical guidelines for hypertension assessment.
