Google Partners with ReNew Energy on Solar Project to Address Value Chain Emissions in India

Google has announced a partnership with ReNew Energy to support a new 150 megawatt solar power project in Rajasthan India. The agreement is part of Google’s broader effort to reduce emissions across its global value chain which spans multiple regions industries and energy sources. Clean electricity has been identified as a key area of focus especially in Asia Pacific where many of Google’s suppliers operate.

Under the long-term agreement Google will receive environmental attribute certificates from the solar project and apply them toward its scope 3 emissions. This approach is intended to address value chain emissions that cannot be directly linked to individual suppliers. The deal reflects the principles outlined in a recently released Google white paper and marks the company’s first implementation of this specific scope 3 framework.

The project is designed to add new renewable generation capacity to the grid rather than relying on existing supply. By focusing on India the investment targets a region with rising energy demand and a rapidly expanding power system. Google says the initiative is meant to demonstrate how companies can take credible action on value chain emissions even when full supply chain data is not available.

This solar project builds on earlier agreements that supported 186 megawatts of wind and solar capacity across several Indian states.
