Honda has announced it will discontinue production of its current fuel cell system at Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC in the United States before the end of 2026. The facility is a joint venture between Honda and General Motors located in Brownstown Michigan. After production ends, Honda will shift to a next generation fuel cell system developed independently by the company.

Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC was established in 2017 as the automotive industry’s first joint venture dedicated to fuel cell system production. The collaboration combined development, manufacturing and procurement expertise from both companies. This resulted in durable fuel cell systems, improved low temperature performance, advanced production methods and cost efficiencies through shared suppliers.

Following a review of the partnership, Honda and GM agreed to discontinue fuel cell production at the facility. Honda will continue to advance its independently developed fuel cell technologies and expand hydrogen related business opportunities as part of its long term growth strategy.

Honda is working toward carbon neutrality across all products and operations by 2050 and aims to reduce environmental impact across the full product lifecycle. Hydrogen remains a key focus alongside electrification with more than three decades of research and development in fuel cell technologies.
