Nokia and Deutsche Bahn (DB) have deployed the world’s first commercial 1900 MHz (n101) 5G radio network with a standalone 5G core on live railway test tracks in Germany. The solution supports the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), enabling mission-critical, real-time communication for safer, more efficient and sustainable rail operations.
This milestone marks the transition from GSM-R to 5G-based FRMCS, paving the way for automation, smart maintenance, and intelligent infrastructure. Deployed at DB’s digital railway test field in the Ore Mountains, the network integrates failover, self-healing, and real-time monitoring for high availability.
The project also contributes to the European FP2-MORANE-2 initiative, advancing rail digitalization across Europe. Built with Nokia’s AirScale portfolio and optimized 5G SA core.
