Nokia has introduced a new 5G solution to support the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), the global standard set to replace the existing GSM-R network. The launch includes the first commercial 5G radio for the 1900 MHz (n101) band, along with a dedicated 5G standalone core optimized for railway operations.
The system is designed for mission-critical communications, enabling real-time monitoring, automation and secure cross-border communication. It allows railways to operate both legacy GSM-R and new 5G systems side by side, ensuring a smooth transition. With modular and scalable features, the solution can be deployed regionally or nationwide.
Key benefits include support for automated train operations, improved passenger information systems, integrated voice and data communications and predictive maintenance to reduce downtime. The technology also helps lower energy use and emissions by making operations more efficient.
Nokia has long experience in railway communications, having deployed GSM-R in over 20 countries. The new solution builds on that expertise and will also be tested under the EU-funded FP2-MORANE-2 project, which focuses on advancing digital railway operations in Europe.
