Nokia and Tampnet have formed a partnership to strengthen 5G offshore connectivity in the Gulf of Mexico. The collaboration builds on earlier work in Norway, where the companies introduced an offshore 5G edge network, and now focuses on expanding similar capabilities to U.S. offshore operations. Nokia will supply its 5G AirScale radio technology across Tampnet’s network, which includes 120 active base stations and coverage planned for up to 400 offshore platforms, rigs, FPSO units, wind installations and vessels.
The initiative supports Tampnet’s goal of upgrading digital infrastructure in a region where it runs private and public networks and manages subsea fiber links that connect offshore sites to the mainland. The enhanced 5G deployment aims to improve areas such as remote monitoring, predictive maintenance, and automation for offshore industries. It also intends to support communication needs related to worker safety and day-to-day operations.
Both organizations state that the project will help offshore energy producers use more advanced digital tools across their facilities. Nokia’s AirScale equipment is positioned to enable real-time data use, while Tampnet’s offshore network serves as the backbone for delivering these services. The partnership extends the companies’ ongoing work in strengthening connectivity for the offshore energy sector.
