Panasonic Verifies 99% Suppression of Pertussis Bacteria with Gaseous Hypochlorous Acid

Osaka, Japan October 31, 2025: Panasonic Corporation’s Heating & Ventilation A/C Company has achieved an industry-first verification that gaseous hypochlorous acid an active chlorine component volatilized from hypochlorous acid solution can suppress over 99% of adhered pertussis bacteria within four hours. Conducted in collaboration with the Kitasato Research Center for Environmental Science, the study represents a major milestone in air hygiene technology.

Pertussis, a contagious respiratory infection, has recently resurged among teenagers, contributing to Japan’s “Quattro Infectious Diseases” wave alongside COVID-19, fifth disease, and measles. Panasonic’s breakthrough adds pertussis bacteria to the list of pathogens already confirmed to be suppressed by gaseous hypochlorous acid.

Derived from electrolyzed saltwater, hypochlorous acid offers strong sterilization and deodorization capabilities with long-lasting diffusion and stability its gaseous form has a half-life exceeding 50 hours. Panasonic has spent nearly 40 years advancing this technology, first applied in vending machine hygiene systems.
