Samsung Electronics and SoftBank Corp. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on next-generation communication technologies, focusing on 6G and AI-based Radio Access Network (AI-RAN) innovations. The partnership will explore four areas 6G, AI for RAN, AI and RAN and Large Telecom Model (LTM) to identify new use cases and develop core technologies for future networks.
The collaboration aims to integrate AI into network operations to improve efficiency and user experience. Under the “AI for RAN” and “AI and RAN” concepts, the companies will study ways to merge AI workloads with base station functions for better orchestration and optimization. They also plan to research the potential use of generative AI in communication systems.
This initiative comes as global discussions on 6G standardization gain momentum, including exploration of new frequency bands like 7GHz. Samsung’s Advanced Communications Research Center will lead research efforts, with plans to host the Silicon Valley Future Wireless Summit to promote dialogue across industry and academia.
