Siemens Mobility and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) have signed a long-term framework agreement to digitalize Switzerland’s railway interlockings, marking a major step toward a modern, efficient, and sustainable rail network. The agreement covers the construction of complete interlocking systems including hardware, software, and services such as development, training, and maintenance using Siemens’ advanced Signaling X technology.

Under the ten-year contract, which includes three optional five-year extensions and 25 years of maintenance support, Siemens will help SBB transition approximately 500 interlockings to digital systems, replacing around 80% of existing infrastructure over the next two decades. The first digital interlockings are expected to be commissioned by 2029.

With over a century of partnership, Siemens Mobility brings extensive expertise in signaling technology and project execution within Switzerland. This collaboration reinforces both companies’ commitment to advancing rail digitalization, enabling more trains to run at shorter intervals and driving the future of sustainable passenger and freight transport in Switzerland.
