Siemens Mobility, Equans and Infrabel have completed the rollout of ETCS Level 2 across Belgium’s national rail network, marking a major step in the country’s rail modernization program. Launched in 2015, the project upgraded 2,274 kilometers of track with the European Train Control System, replacing older signaling technologies with continuous digital communication and modern interlocking systems.
The upgrade improves rail safety, operational efficiency and cross-border interoperability in line with European Union standards. Key national railway axes and major European transport corridors are now fully equipped, allowing smoother international rail operations. The work was carried out while keeping the network largely operational, with minimal closures across a complex and busy rail system.
Within the consortium, Siemens Mobility led the implementation and modernization of ETCS Level 2 and interlocking systems across most of the network. Equans managed on-site activities including civil works, electrical installation, hardware deployment, cabling and documentation. Infrabel coordinated the program as Belgium’s rail infrastructure manager.
The project forms part of Belgium’s ETCS Masterplan, which aims to equip all railway lines with ETCS by December 2025, ahead of broader EU timelines. The completed rollout supports safer, more reliable and future-ready rail transport across the country.
