Siemens Mobility has signed a new agreement with voestalpine to increase the share of CO₂-reduced “green steel” in its rail vehicle production. Under the agreement, around 20 percent of the steel supplied in 2025 will come from voestalpine’s Greentec Steel Edition, which produces up to 70 percent fewer emissions compared to conventional steel. The deal also includes an option to procure additional volumes over the next three years, supporting Siemens Mobility’s broader sustainability goals.
This initiative builds on the “Green Steel for Bogies” pilot project launched in 2022 at Siemens Mobility’s global competence center in Graz, Austria. Approximately 3,000 bogies will be produced annually with a growing proportion of CO₂-reduced steel. The material is already being used in locomotives and passenger coaches, and Siemens plans to further expand its application across its product portfolio.
By integrating greener materials into production, Siemens Mobility aims to enhance the sustainability of the rail industry and strengthen its supply chain resilience. The company targets a 90 percent reduction in CO₂e emissions in its operations by 2030 and net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2050. The certification from voestalpine ensures transparency and traceability of greenhouse gas emissions throughout the supply chain.
