Canon Inc. has achieved a major production milestone, surpassing 170 million RF and EF interchangeable lenses for its EOS series as of October 2025 extending its world record for the highest number of interchangeable camera lenses ever produced. The landmark 170 millionth lens was the RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z, released in 2024.
Introduced in 1987, Canon’s EF lens series revolutionized photography with innovations such as the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), Image Stabilizer (IS), and Diffractive Optical (DO) elements. The 2018 launch of the RF lens series for mirrorless EOS R cameras further advanced image quality and design flexibility through a large aperture and high-speed communication system. Canon’s combined RF/EF lineup now includes 108 models, covering focal lengths from 10mm to 1200mm, including VR, hybrid, and power zoom lenses.
Lens production began at the Utsunomiya Plant and has expanded across five global sites, with key milestones including 50 million units in 2009 and 100 million in 2014. Canon has also maintained the No.1 global market share for digital interchangeable-lens cameras for 22 consecutive years. The company continues to advance its imaging technologies, contributing to the evolution of photography and videography worldwide.
