Siemens Smart Infrastructure introduced Siprotec V, a virtualized protection and control solution for digital substations. Siprotec V is the software based version of the established Siprotec 5 system and is designed to help utilities modernize power grids while reducing cost space and carbon impact.
Siprotec V consolidates the functions of up to 60 traditional protection and control devices into a single server based platform. By reducing physical panels and copper cabling utilities can lower capital expenditure by up to 25 percent and reduce substation building space by up to 45 percent. The solution also cuts carbon emissions by up to 50 percent per substation by minimizing hardware and cabling requirements.
The software defined architecture allows utilities to test and validate substation setups digitally before deployment. This shortens installation and commissioning timelines and can accelerate project execution by up to six months. Siprotec V also supports faster software updates and easier scaling as grid requirements change.
In addition the platform enables the use of AI applications directly within substations to support real time monitoring predictive analytics and operational decision making. Siprotec V is built with cybersecurity standards in mind and aligns with guidelines such as BDEW and NERC CIP to support secure and resilient grid operations.
