Canon Inc. has collaborated with Teijin Limited to improve how CO2 emissions from virgin plastic materials are calculated in Japan. The initiative was carried out under the SuMPO Environmental Label Program managed by the Sustainable Management Promotion Organization.
Teijin obtained Japan’s first SuMPO Environmental Product Declaration in the virgin plastic materials category by using primary operational data instead of industry average emission factors. Canon then used this supplier specific data in the life cycle CO2 calculations of its own products, including the imagePRESS V900, and registered its own SuMPO EPD certifications.
The SuMPO EPD framework follows ISO 14025 standards and requires disclosure of environmental data across a product’s full life cycle. By using actual supplier data, the process allows emissions reduction efforts to be reflected more accurately.
Canon estimates that using primary data could reduce reported CO2 emissions from raw materials and components by up to 2.8 percentage points compared to industry averages. The company plans to expand this approach to more materials and suppliers to support supply chain decarbonization.
