LG Electronics is strengthening its role in the software-defined vehicle (SDV) ecosystem by co-hosting the Eclipse SDV Community Meetup in Seoul. The event, held at LG Sciencepark in collaboration with the Eclipse Foundation, marks the community’s first gathering in South Korea. It brings together global automotive and technology players, including BMW, ETAS and Hyundai Mobis, to discuss open-source approaches for building shared software foundations for next-generation vehicles.
Modern vehicles rely on increasingly complex software, with over 100 million lines of code managing core functions. Many of these foundational components—such as operating systems, security systems and communication frameworks—are common across automakers, yet they are often developed independently. The Eclipse SDV Community aims to streamline this process by promoting shared, standardized software blocks. This approach is intended to reduce duplication, lower development efforts and free resources for differentiated features like infotainment and driver-assistance technologies.
LG’s experience with webOS Open-Source Edition positions the company to contribute meaningfully to joint development projects. It has been involved in initiatives like the SDV Community Reference (S-CORE) project and is driving new efforts such as the Pullpiri project. LG also participates in the SOAFEE global standardization community, collaborating with industry partners to support the evolution of open-source automotive software.
