System to Support Microgravity Studies in Drug Discovery

Nikon has announced that its live cell observation system has been selected for a research project aboard the International Space Station.

The project, supported by the NASA and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, will study the effects of microgravity on life sciences and drug discovery. The system will be part of the Northrop Grumman CRS-24 mission scheduled for launch from Florida.

Nikon’s system will be integrated into the Nikon Experimentation Microscope in Orbit platform, enabling high-precision observation of live cells and biological tissues in space. It will work alongside a cell culture and incubation system developed by BioServe Space Technologies.

The research aims to better understand how microgravity affects cellular behavior, which could support advancements in pharmaceuticals and insights into disease and aging.

This selection builds on Nikon’s long-standing involvement in space missions and microscopy technologies used on the ISS.
