Panasonic Automotive Systems has received broad industry backing for its plan to standardize VirtIO device virtualization for automotive use. Major automakers supporting the move include Honda Motor Co., Mazda Motor Corporation, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Nissan Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corporation. The goal is to create open and standardized virtual hardware environments that can work across different vehicle platforms.
The company has also completed a VirtIO compliant software platform for Cockpit Domain Controllers. VirtIO is an open source device virtualization technology that lets software run on different hardware systems. This allows automotive teams to start software development before physical hardware is ready which can reduce development time.
Since 2018 Panasonic Automotive Systems has been involved in global VirtIO development in collaboration with automotive IT and semiconductor partners. Making VirtIO an industry standard could support an open ecosystem where manufacturers have more flexibility in hardware selection and can improve software development for software defined vehicles.
