Samsung Secures First DUCD Based Verification for Carbon Reduction in Connected Appliances

Samsung Electronics has achieved the world’s first verification of carbon reduction impact using the Decarbonizing the Use Phase of Connected Devices specification. The verification, conducted by Carbon Trust Assurance, assessed the impact of Samsung’s AI Energy Mode in select washing machines. This marks the first time a product feature has been independently validated under the DUCD framework, which focuses on measuring carbon emissions during actual product usage rather than production.

The verification confirms that AI Energy Mode reduces energy use and greenhouse gas emissions when activated during real world operation. Carbon Trust Assurance compared energy consumption data from washing machines used with and without AI Energy Mode over a one year period. The assessment verified measurable reductions in electricity consumption and associated emissions when the feature was switched on.

Samsung has been involved with the DUCD initiative since 2022 as a Secretariat member, contributing to the development of standardized methods for tracking energy use and carbon savings in connected devices. The DUCD specification was published in late 2024 to create consistent global guidance for use phase carbon measurement.
