Nokia has been chosen to provide technology for the Medusa Submarine Cable System, a major underwater fiber-optic network that will link several countries in North Africa with Europe. The project, owned by AFR-IX Telecom, aims to improve digital infrastructure across both regions by offering faster and more stable internet connections.

The Medusa system will connect nations like Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya and Egypt to various points in Europe through high-capacity fiber links. It is designed as an open-access network, meaning telecom companies can use it to expand their services. This will help support the rollout of 5G, expand cloud networks and meet the growing data needs of technologies like AI.

Nokia’s role in the project involves providing its 1830 Global Express (GX) platform and ICE7 coherent optics. This equipment allows the transmission of large amounts of data, tens of terabits per second per fiber pair while maintaining low latency and efficient power use.

By enabling better connectivity between Europe and North Africa, the Medusa cable project is expected to support digital inclusion and technological development in the region. The network also builds a foundation for future innovations and improved cross-border communication.
