Schneider Electric and E.ON Sign Long-Term Deal for SF6 Free Technology

Schneider Electric has signed a long-term agreement with E.ON to supply SF6 free medium voltage switchgear, supporting E.ON’s transition to a greener energy grid. This deal ensures early access to sustainable switchgear solutions that meet the EU’s upcoming F-Gas Regulation, which bans SF6 in new switchgear from January 2026.

Schneider will provide both primary and secondary AirSeT switchgear, backed by successful pilot testing at E.ON’s subsidiary, Westnetz. The move builds on over 20 years of collaboration between the companies and aims to standardize sustainable equipment across E.ON’s networks.

SF6 is a potent greenhouse gas with high global warming potential. Schneider’s AirSeT technology uses pure air and vacuum instead, gaining recognition including an iF Design Award. The equipment has already been field-tested in Germany and Switzerland.

Production will be supported by Schneider’s facilities in Germany and Hungary, helping scale supply for growing demand in Europe. The partnership marks a key step toward digital, resilient, and low-emission power infrastructure.
