ProRail, which manages the Netherlands’ railway infrastructure, has teamed up with Nokia to modernize its mobile communications system. Over the next four years, Nokia will help ProRail shift its GSM-Railway core network to a cloud-native setup. This marks the first time such a system is being deployed in the global railway industry.

The updated network will continue to support ProRail’s current 2G infrastructure but with improved performance and reliability. The move aims to reduce service downtime, lower long-term costs and make train operations more efficient by allowing real-time data sharing. The upgrade will also prepare ProRail for future mobile communication systems like FRMCS, which are expected to replace GSM-R over time.

By adopting cloud-native technology, ProRail can better manage network operations on-site, integrate new tools when needed and improve overall safety and service quality for passengers. The project is seen as a step toward building a more flexible and modern communication setup for railway systems in the Netherlands.
