Jio has launched JioPC, a new service that turns a regular television into a virtual desktop using the Jio set-top box. With this setup, users can connect a keyboard and mouse to their TV and access a computer-like interface directly on the screen. Most of the processing is done on the cloud so no additional hardware is needed.
The service provides basic computing functions like word processing, web browsing and online learning. It includes LibreOffice for offline tasks, and users can also access Microsoft Office through a web browser. JioPC is currently in a free trial phase and available only by invitation.
To use JioPC, users must have a Jio set-top box, which comes free with some Jio Fiber plans or can be purchased separately.
JioPC is mainly aimed at homes that have a TV but no computer. In India, while a large number of households own televisions, only a small percentage have personal computers. Jio hopes this service will help bridge that digital divide by offering an affordable and simple computing solution for more families.
